Seven alleged individuals of Germany's far-left group stand trial over series of violent incidents

A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group along with several other European far-left and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors claim the network was responsible for attacks on locations in the country and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an yearly gathering called the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T., is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the identical event in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

A different activist previously active with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the US decision and urged the German administration to take similar action. However, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The danger from the organization has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have already been convicted or remain detained.”
