Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

The Championships court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the option to challenge particular calls made by the official, mirroring the protocol already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move comes just a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a player can request.

A Recent Example

A recent example took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
